Why Is AliExpress Tracking So Confusing?

Most students ordering from AliExpress for the first time run into the same wall: the tracking number shows up in the app, but nothing makes sense. The status says something like shipped, and then nothing moves for two weeks. That is actually normal, but it helps to understand why.

AliExpress sellers use a mix of carriers depending on price and destination. Your order might go through SpeedPAK tracking, EMS express tracking, or even be handed off to your local postal service on arrival. A universal parcel tracker like 17track or Parcelsapp can read most of these formats in one place.

What Does My Tracking Number Actually Mean?

The format of your tracking number tells you a lot. Numbers starting with LY, UE, or CP usually mean China Post or ePacket, which transfers to USPS on arrival in the US. At that point, you can use US post office tracking or USPS priority mail tracking directly on the USPS site.

If your number starts with 1Z, that is UPS. JD, EA, or EB prefixes often indicate EMS. Some sellers use DHL eCommerce tracking for budget international shipping, which is different from standard DHL express tracking or DHL tracking international. Knowing the difference saves a lot of frustration.

Common Tracking Questions from Students

  • My tracking says departed country of origin but nothing since. Is that normal? Yes. Customs processing can take 1 to 3 weeks depending on volume and your country.
  • Can I use postal tracking to check it? Yes. Once it clears customs, tools like track any parcel or your national postal site will pick it up.
  • What if I need certified mail tracking? That applies to USPS certified mail specifically. AliExpress packages do not use this service.
  • My post office tracking number is not working. Wait 48 hours after the status updates. Carrier systems lag behind physical movement.
  • The seller gave me a number that does not work anywhere. Contact the seller first. If no response within a week, open a dispute through AliExpress buyer protection.

When Should You Actually Worry?

Standard AliExpress shipping to the US takes 15 to 45 days. If your tracking has not updated in over 30 days and the estimated delivery window has passed, that is worth escalating. Use the AliExpress app to open a dispute before the buyer protection period closes, which is usually 15 days after the listed delivery date.

Checking through a universal parcel tracker every few days is enough. Refreshing hourly does not speed anything up, and the status gaps between scans are just how international shipping works.
